Club Statement: Remembering Chris Davies

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our founder and former Chairman, Chris Davies.

Chris was a true pioneer of grassroots and non-league football. His journey began back in 1961 when he founded Grasmere Rovers, a humble but ambitious club that laid the foundations for what we now know as Cheadle Town Football Club. In 1982, Chris oversaw the rebranding of the club to Cheadle Town, a change that coincided with the move to our current home at Park Road Stadium - now known as the Ground Up Solutions Stadium.

Chris dedicated his life to the development of this Football Club. His tireless work behind the scenes - from handling day-to-day administration to managing finances, and always ensuring the playing side was supported - was driven by an unshakeable love for the club and the game.

Running a semi-professional football club has never been easy, and during Chris’s time, especially in the early years, there was little or no funding. But through countless challenges, Chris never wavered. His determination and refusal to let Cheadle Town fold during difficult times was a testament to his character. Many of the values and spirit that define the club today are a direct result of Chris’s leadership and resolve.

Personally, my own journey into non-league football began in the mid-90s, influenced heavily by Chris. First as a supporter and then as a volunteer, I saw up close his commitment and passion - qualities that I’ve tried to carry with me ever since. This year marks my 30th year with the club, and I know that wouldn’t have been possible without that early inspiration from Chris.

Chris stepped down from his role as Chairman in 2018, during another financially challenging period for the club. His decision to step aside allowed for new investment and a fresh chapter in the club’s history — one that has since brought us long-awaited success, including our promotion to Step 5 after more than two decades.

While we didn’t always agree - two passionate individuals often don’t — we always shared one thing: a deep, unwavering love for Cheadle Town. His legacy, and the legacy of Grasmere Rovers, will live on through everything we do at this club.

If not for a chance meeting with Chris all those years ago, I likely wouldn’t be where I am today. For that, and for everything he gave to this Football Club, I will always be grateful.

On behalf of everyone at Cheadle Town FC, we send our heartfelt condolences to Chris’s family, friends, and all those who knew him.

Rest in peace, Chris.

Thank you for everything.
